چکیده

Describing routes is an easy everyday task for people who know the environment well. However, strategies exist also for situations where only incomplete knowledge is available. We present a study eliciting verbalized route plans and thinkaloud data from novices and experts who were asked to find and describe routes in a complex building. The spatial descriptions were analyzed relating the level of knowledge to route efficiency, and to occurrences of particular linguistic elements. Results reveal a diversity of wayfinding and description strategies, ranging from generic methods via building specific strategies to classic turn-by-turn directions. Experience with the building predicted the performance in finding efficient paths as well as the extent to which concrete spatial elements and uncertainty or orientation markers occurred in the descriptions. These findings open up the possibility of predicting the expertise of a speaker from the form as well as the contents of a route description.

The Floor Strategy: Wayfinding Cognition in a Multi-Level Building

This short paper is concerned with strategies and cognitive processes of wayfinding in public buildings. We conducted an empirical study in a complex multi-level building, comparing performance measures of experienced and inexperienced participants in different wayfinding tasks. Thinking aloud protocols provided insights into navigation strategies, planning phases, use of landmarks and signage....

Wayfinding Performance in and the Spatial Knowledge of a Color-coded Building for Adults and Children

The study reported here investigates the effect color has on the performance in a wayfinding task, the wayfinding strategies used and the acquisition of survey knowledge of a total of sixty participants: twenty second graders, sixth graders, and adults each. All participants had to find their way to a goal in a virtual environment with either a colored or a gray ground. After that, they had to ...

Comparing Human Wayfinding Behavior in Real and Virtual Environment

This paper builds on a previous research comparing wayfinding behavior in virtual and real environments in order to reveal the theoretical basis for comparison while simultaneously producing applicable implications for designers and architects. The chosen site is a complex office building. Its virtual equivalent was first modeled using standard design tools available for most practicing archite...

Up the down staircase: Wayfinding strategies in multi-level buildings

The intention of this article is to create a link between human spatial cognition research and architectural design. We conducted an empirical study with human subjects in a complex multi-level building and compared thinking aloud protocols and performance measures of experienced and inexperienced participants in different wayfinding tasks. Three specific strategies for navigation in multilevel...

Implementing an augmented reality-enabled wayfinding system through studying user experience and requirements in complex environments

Background: Wayfinding is an exceedingly complicated cognitive process, especially in complex environments such as hospitals, shopping centers and airports. Inhabitants of such large environments can become lost very easily if they are unfamiliar with the environment. Although they may eventually be able to discover the route to a specific destination, interacting with conventional wayfinding a...
